Looking to remain calm?

Problems with remaining calm are usually caused internally by activation of the sympathetic nervous system, where many physiological changes occur in order to prepare the body for ‘fight or flight mode’. This is a normal healthy response as it helps protect us from danger however when our body is continuously in this mode, it can have negative and detrimental effects on our health.

But don’t worry, all is not lost – aguulp is here to help.

So, what’s happening in my body when I’m not calm?

Feeling anger or frustration usually means we are dealing with an uncomfortable or strong overwhelming feeling or emotion, which commonly leads to physiological changes and the release of stress hormones… which is likely to be what you’re experiencing.

It’s also more common than you think.

top tips for remaining calm

  • Blood sugar fluctuations can negatively affect our mood and can cause feelings of anxiety due to a rise and release of stress hormones. Ways we can help balance our blood sugar levels is to include protein with every meal and snack, avoid refined ‘white’ carbohydrates and avoid going for long periods of time without food.
  • Avoid too much caffeine. Not only can caffeine negatively impact our blood sugar levels, but in some people it can exacerbate anxiety due to its stimulant effects on the nervous system. Caffeine is also a diuretic so it encourages dehydration and interferes with the absorption of important stress busting nutrients such as vitamin C and the B vitamins.
  • Mood boosting foods – Tryptophan is an amino acid which helps to make the feel good hormone ‘serotonin’. Good sources of tryptophan include; bananas, oats, mango, turkey, brown rice and cottage cheese.
