hear from other happy poopersSo, what’s happening in my body when I have diarrhoea?
Diarrhoea usually means one is experiencing loose or frequent stools and occurs when the body is trying to get rid of something it doesn’t like or when the digestive system is feeling overwhelmed. For example, food containing bacteria or foods that the body may not be able to break down sufficiently (intolerance) or allergy (i.e coeliac). Certain medications can cause loose stools as can caffeine, particularly for those who may be sensitive to the effects of caffeine. Stress can also result in physiological changes and activation of the sympathetic nervous system. This response can sometimes cause the bowels to empty since the body is trying to make itself lighter in preparation for ‘fight or flight’. Occasional loose stools is quite normal however ongoing ‘chronic’ diarrhoea can lead to dehydration, malabsorption of nutrients (leading to nutritional deficiencies) and other more serious health problems.
top tips for reducing diarrhoea
- Watch out for certain sugars Whilst sugar in general is detrimental to gut health (as it feeds the bad bacteria) certain sugars are known to be poorly absorbed in the intestines and can lead to diarrheoa. These may include sorbitol and fructose- found in fruit juices, fizzy drinks and desserts.
- Keep a food diary Allergies and food sensitivities are common triggers for diarrhoea. In cases where no known cause has been established, the keeping of a food diary can help to identify potential trigger foods.
- Cut down on caffeine– For some people, especially those who may be sensitive to the effects of caffeine, diarrheoa can be a common complaint. Cutting down on caffeine intake is recommended and avoiding the consumption of caffeine on an empty stomach may also be helpful in preventing loose stools.
